Trustee and school board candidates from three local townships gathered together for a meet-and-greet event Thursday night. It was organized by the Mahoning County Teenage Republicans and held at the Republican Headquarters on Route 224 in Boardman. All school board and trustee candidates from Boardman, Canfield and Austintown were invited, with each given 5 minutes to address the crowd. The Chairman of the Mahoning County Teenage Republicans, Evan Beil, said he wasn't sure if he was going to organize an event like this until he saw the financial difficulties Boardman Township is currently facing. That inspired him to get the word out on what the trustee's stood for.
"I mean, many people don't hear about the school board or trustee's actual views. They may see a yard sign or two, but they don't actually see much of the candidates. Which, I think there needs to be more of. They're representing us, representing our schools and spending our tax dollars," said Beil.
The event was non-partisan, with candidates from each party invited. No candidates from Austintown Township showed up.
