The Blott Needy Kids Program of Liberty has helped brighten the holidays for less fortunate students for the past three decades. Now, in light of the recent tragedy of 13-year-old Liberty student Ja-Brajasia Green, the group is reaching out to the township for support.
Liberty's EJ Blott Elementary School has paired up with township administrators this holiday season to provide gifts to needy students, including Ja-Brajasia's four brothers and sisters. Ja-Brajasia's mother, Wilneice, was also killed in the shooting.
"We immediately came together, the schools, the township, to talk to the family and find out what they need," said June Smallwood, project official. "I provided a list of the childrens' names, ages and their shoe sizes, clothing sizes, so that we can get more contributions from the community."
Gretchen Reed first began the program as a teacher about 30 years ago.
"I would go to my Sunday school class first and say I have students on the playground without boots, hats, gloves, and I said I'll help," Reed said.
This year the project is assisting 76 students. That's up 25 from last year. In addition to past years, the organization is also collecting winter clothing for those in kindergarten through high school.
Besides the Liberty Township Administration Building, collection barrels can be found at all three Liberty schools.
"It's part of our culture here in Liberty to help people who are in need of help, and it's something that's ongoing," said Pat Ungaro, township administrator.
The gift-giving will continue for two more weeks. A separate winter clothing drive will continue into February.
