The state of Ohio is again offering help to lower income families as they try to beat the heat this summer.

Columbiana County's Community Action Agency is taking applications for the state's Summer Crisis Program. The Ohio Department of Development provided money to local counties to assist eligible residents with the costs of keeping cool, either with new air conditioning unit or covering their monthly electric bills.

"Sixty years or older, or anybody that has a physical disability that would require a doctor saying they need an air conditioner for the summer 'cause it's hard for them to breathe," said Ruth Allison, emergency services director.

The air conditioners are free and with full warranties for eligible applicants. Residents who receive a unit through the program have to wait three years before they can obtain a replacement. Residents also have the option of receiving up to $175 to cover their monthly utility bills.
