For the last couple years, John Gechter kept a secret from his friends, his classmates at Grove City College and even his family back home near Philadelphia.

All that came to a screeching halt last Thursday when someone on campus saw pictures of John engaging in gay porn on the internet.  He tells us, "By Friday morning, I would say a good 1,500 students had received that e-mail."

For the last several years, Gechter had been working as a model.  Then he says someone approached him to do gay porn -- something he tells us helped pay his tuition at Grove City, making $3,000 to $5,000 a shoot.  Once his secret was out, things on campus changed quickly.  He says, "People would laugh.  They'd mock me.  They'd throw fruit at me in the cafeteria."

Just days later, and only weeks before graduation, he says the school issued an ultimatum: withdraw from school, appeal the charges against him or be suspended.

Grove City is renowned across the country for its conservative reputation.  The student handbook states its standards of conduct "are based on biblical principles" , listing sexual misconduct or other disruptive activities as violations which could be disciplined.  Gechter admits he knew one day he would be caught, adding however, "I never considered that the school would kick me out."

For the record, the College says Gechter voluntarily withdrew from class, issuing a statement claiming the student acknowledged his work in adult entertainment, knowing that violated the student code.  On-campus reaction is mixed from those supporting Grove City, to those who believe Gechter's work is no one else's business, to those who think the discipline may have been heavy-handed, but also admit the College's image can't be left to chance.

At this point, Gechter says he's not sure where he'll turn next.  He says he'll probably need to find another school to take the last few credits he needs to graduate.

Right now, he's trying to get his family past the shock of learning what he's been doing, but he tells us they're growing to accept him for what he is.

In the meantime, you can listen to our full conversation with him on our website.  You can also take part in our on-line poll asking if you think Grove City acted fairly in its discipline of Gechter.

I am a current Grove City College student, and I resent the negative publicity that we're getting. We are NOT religious cultists, and I saw no evidence of anyone judging him or mistreating him. I remember when we found out about it, and the student body gave a collective shrug. While we support the college's decision to suspend him (we all signed the pledge to follow the code of conduct), we paid very little attention to him as a person. I highly doubt that he was treated badly beyond a few weird looks and maybe a couple of comments. Think about it; I'm sure you would react strangely if you found out that your friend was a porn star, too. As far as the students who looked at the porn, many of us are disgusted that they would go looking for it. They would have had to use an unregistered proxy server if they accessed it on campus; there are blocks on our internet at school. Hopefully they will be punished. Most likely it will be overlooked. Truly, though, don't judge Grove City and its students. Most of us are not extremists, but we do have our beliefs, and we believe that he was wrong. Period. Morally wrong. However, we are not about to treat him badly because of it.

As a former student of Grove City College, I remember the high standards of the college being emphasized repeatedly before even applying to the school. The college's focus on these standards applies to not only academics, but also to the lifestyles and choices of the students. The college is simply upholding expectations he clearly knew about. He states that he knew that he was breaking the code. If he wanted to do this without potential ramifications he could have decided to transfer to a different school. Grove City is merely acting in accordance to its principles. Had a different school done the same thing for cheating, we would be applauding their efforts to curb copywright violation. While it does sadden me that other students chose to ostracize and throw food at the young man, I do support the decision of the college.

The student involved used a phony name, did not identify himself as a Grove City College (GCC) student, and did this on his own time. Nevertheless, consistent with the "values" of GCC he should be suspended. Several questions, however: 1. Will the student (or students) who veiwed the gay porn be disciplined or at least counseled? 2. Was the viewing done on or off campus? 3. Was a GCC internet computer used or was it a non-GCC computer? 4. What if the activities had been learned about after graduation? Would the diploma have been revoked? 5. The student claims to have received hate e-mails (although I will concede he probably exaggerated the numbers). Is the sending of hate e-mail consistent with GCC values or Christian values? Finally, during the last seven years hundreds of thousands of brave, patriotic young Americans have served this county in Iraq or Afghanistan. In 2008 a Post 9/11 GI Bill was enacted that will enable these young people (many of whom otherwise could not afford it) to attend college. However, none of these young National Heroes will be able to attend GCC because GCC does not accept Federal funding the GI Bill. This exclusion of young mlitary veterans makes the patriotism of GCC at least questionable.

I would be interested to know if the student that went looking for gay porn on the interent at Grove will also face discipline. While I don't approve of the porn being made I think Grove missed a good opportunity to really give him a chance to repent and show grace. I mean what is grace..its an un-merited gift. What if after all came out if Grove said "We forgive you we want you to turn from what you are doing and we will help you. We want you to realize how much your Dad in Heaven loves you and we want to show you something that you do not deserve..." I think Grove really screwed this up my missing an opportunity to show love in action as well as forgiveness.

John G. says: "People would laugh. They'd mock me. They'd throw fruit at me in the cafeteria." The Bible says: A woman caught in the act of adultery was brought to Jesus. He didn't condemn the woman because the men who brought the woman to him were Hypocrites. He forgave her and told her to "sin no more." Let he who is without sin, cast the first fruit in the cafeteria" There are Religious people and there are RELIGIOUS CULTISTS. It seems like many people at Grove City are RELIGIOUS CULTISTS. I would NEVER want to attend a school like this. It is too closed minded for me. (Hmmm! I wonder what kind of internet sites many of the male students look at when they are alone???)

We know that nude photos of Miss America can result in revoking her title because it is not in accordance with the pageant's values. National Honor Society does not recognize academically qualified students if their "honor" in other parts of their lives is questionable. Why should the college be any different? I do not want to see the significance of a degree from Grove City diminshed by awarding one to someone who does not uphold the college's values. Grove City never claims to be "mightier than thou" as Becky asserts, only that the One who IS mighter than thou should be guiding more than Sunday worship. I hope Grove City sticks to its priciples and does not cede to a liberal, atheistic agenda.

I worked in Grove City for 14 years and Grove City College has always had that mightier than thou attitude. As long as his actions were not hurting any one else he should not have been kicked out of school. What was the other students motive for telling on him? Why can't people just worry about their own life and leave others alone? I hope he sues the school.
