A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a New Middletown woman on a charge of theft.

Cheryl Blakeman was arrested back in November and is accused of taking thousands of dollars from the Springfield Schools Parent-Teacher Organization while serving as the group's treasurer.

According to police, the money came from the entire community to help local youngsters. Police said Blakeman took as much as $20,000 since 2004. Chief Vince D'Egidio said Blakeman would take it from the PTO account and use it to pay off debt after depositing the funds at a Huntington Bank branch where she worked as a teller.

Blakeman has since left the PTO position.

She could appear in court later this month.
