The Mahoning County Treasurer wonders if the state of the economy is the reason there are nearly 3,000 parcels of land on which taxes are overdue for the first time.

Lisa Antonini speculates those property owners may be unemployed or under-employed, but she says they still need to pay up.

Antonini is making a final appeal to those landowners. If they don't ask for a payment plan right away, legal action will be taken against the property. Payment plans can extend up to five years under Ohio law. There are no additional penalties or interest assessed as long as the taxpayer abides by the plan.

If the landowner does not set up a payment plan, the next step is legal action and the landowner would be subject to additional fees and costs.

The total amount of taxes owed on the roughly 2,700 delinquent parcels amounts to $3,300,000.
