Close to 80 volunteers showed up at Warren's Perkins Park Friday morning, despite a steady downpour of rain, to begin the construction of what is being called the Valley's Inclusive Playground, otherwise known as V-I-P.
The workers helped unload the brightly colored equipment and began putting it together. No one seemed to mind that they were getting pretty wet. "We used plastic bags for rain suits," said Carmen Santone, one of the volunteers. "The rain slowed us down a bit but it didn't stop us, that's for sure."
"I have twins that have Downs Syndrome and we wanted a place we could go to that would be safe and they would be able to play with other children," said Paulette Eisenbraun.
Paulette says her twins and many other children in the area cannot wait to begin swinging and sliding.
Some of the volunteers included Warren Mayor Mike O'Brien, as well as laid off and retired workers from Severstal and Delphi.
"These are all skilled tradesmen that came out in the rain and donated some time for the kids," said volunteer Hutch Hutchinson.
The volunteers are expected to return Saturday, rain or shine, to help finish the project. Anyone interested in helping is asked to go to Perkins Park. The build will take place from 8 to 4.
