A Columbiana County organization has been honored for helping residents save energy and money.

The Community Action Agency was recognized as number one in the state for saving the most money in weatherizing area homes.

The agency goes into homes and updates old furnaces and water heaters for low-income homeowners. The changes help cut down natural gas use and reduce energy bills.

"When we walk away from a completed unit, we save the people an average of 45-percent on their heating bill," said director Carol Bretz. "So if they're paying $200 a month, when we're done, they pay $110, which gives them an extra $90 to use elsewhere. It's a really big deal."

The money for the home weatherization program has come through a number of grants. If you'd like more information about this program, call (330) 424-4013.
