A Youngstown church is mourning the passing of their beloved leader.

Bishop Norman Wagner died Saturday night from complications following heart surgery. On Sunday, members of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church gathered to grieve the loss of their longtime pastor.

Bishop Wagner had been at the helm of Mount Calvary since the early 1970s and clearly left a big impression on the lives he touched.

"This is a great loss, not just to this church, but to the world," said church member Debra Kennedy.

Church members went on to say that Bishop Wagner was a man who practiced what he preached.

"The key to living was to find your purpose and your destiny, and he exemplified that through the life that he lived," said Assistant Pastor, Jason Whitehead.

Wagner grew up in Youngstown. He graduated from South High School and attended Youngstown State University. He went on to receive a bachelors and masters degree from Aenon Bible College in Indiana.

In 1971, he returned to his roots and took over the church he went to as a child.

"In a community that had many challenges over the years, Bishop Wagner emphasized education," added Whitehead, as well as, "advancing yourself and proving yourself as a person."

Jerome Jones, executive director of Mount Calvary, says because of Bishop Wagner, he went from high school dropout to recent Ph.D. graduate.

"So, Bishop Wagner has been a preacher and an inspiration for excellence. And his investment in our lives and investment in the community is so we can make the world a better place to live in," said Jones.

In this time of mourning for Mount Calvary, church members insist it's also a time to rejoice.

"God doesn't make a mistake, so we will be thanking and glorifying God today," Kennedy said.

Bishop Wagner was 68 years old. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and one granddaughter.

Bishop Wagner was truly a blessing to the Pentecostal Apostolic Oneness Movement. He had such an anointing on him. I remember one convention when he came in the audience and sat by me. Bishop could sing a song and usher in the presence of the Lord like none other. The convention theme for me will forever be "Anything wonderful can happen when Jesus is exalted." I truly give Bishop the testimony Paul gave David. "He served his generation with the help of the Lord and fell on sleep.

Praise the Lord in Jesus' name! Greeting saints of the most high God, I have just found out a few minutes ago. I first meet Bishop Wagner in St.Louis, MO. in 1990. What an inspirational man of God. I was just new to accepting my calling to the ministry. When he spoke, he spoke with confidence and wisdom...I will sure miss him. To his church I will certaintly be praying for you all. To the community of Jesus name churches, Bishop Norman Wagner set the standard. To the world get ready and freely come to Jesus. He stood for believing, repentance of your sins, water baptism in Jesus name, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost by the evidents of speaking in an unknown tongue. Living holy as a life style. I am greatly sorrowful and my heart is heavy upon hearing the passing of Bishop Norman L. Wagner one of the most powerful and eloquent man of God. He was the greatest Presiding Bishop in the history of the P.A.W ! He was an elocutionist, a didactic teacher and full of Godly wisdom and knowledge. Some of my favorite sermons was, "Our Last Night on Earth", "There is a door in The Valley of Achor" & Blessed double Cross." He motivated me to achieve my B.S degree in Business Adminstration and Bachelor in Theology. Love you and now you are in the presence of the Lord! Heaven is richer now that we have lost on of the great MEN of the gospel, Norman L. Wagner. I was totally shocked when I heard the sad news of his passing. As a young man just the fact that he was coming to preach anywhere was met with great joy and anticipation. He was truly a revered, anointed and gifted man of God that will be sorely missed nationally and internationally. Bishop Norman L. Wagner, God has blessed you my friend, and now you are with THE LOED in peace....My condolences to the family and Mt. Calvary Church. Brian Johnson, Akron,OH.

I am totally shocked at the news of Bishop Wagner's death. He was indeed an anointed man of God. We in the Bible Way Churches Worldwide will indeed miss Bishop Wagner. He was a preacher's preacher!!! One message he preached at the Bible Way Temple in DC was "Get in Touch with Heaven". It was a powerful message that I will never forget. I will continue to lift up the family in prayer. Earth has no sorrow that the God in heaven cannot heal.

I can't believe this, I'm so sad. Bishop Wagner was next to no 1 after Bishop McMurray my pastor. I first heard Bishop Wagner in 1980 when he preached the last generation of the Church. The message was profound. I loved to hear him sing; You got to move. He taught me faith and belief in God he was one of God's best now he's in Heaven Praising God with Bishop McMurray and so many others whom he highly respected. I'll See you Bishop Wagner When I get there. Now he's a part of that so great a cloud of witnesses. Sis. Twila Davis

Bishop Wagner will surely be missed. I started following him when I was a child, and I'm 45. Yes, he does practice what he preached; As do my mother, who is also a servant of God, that also preaches and teaches as did Bishop Wagner. May God his congregation and family. ~Marla~ in KY
