Police think a series of armed carjackings in Hubbard and Liberty this month are related. And they're asking drivers and their families to be careful and more aware of their surroundings.

"I think everybody around is concerned about what's going on," said Jane Steiner from the front door of her home on Westview Avenue in Hubbard.

Police in Hubbard and Liberty are investigating three armed carjackings between December 11 and 13. Two of the incidents happened in the 300 block of Westview Avenue in Hubbard, right across the street from Jane Steiner's home.

"They were both on this block, and one night after the other, you know it wasn't like it was spaced out," said Steiner.

Police said in each incident, two to three black males approached the cars and drivers in their own driveways. They used handguns to threaten victims before stealing their keys and anything else on them.

Police reports said the suspects followed one victim all the way into the driveway of his Ravine Drive home in Liberty before pulling a gun on him, demanding the keys and money.

Several victims and their relatives didn't want to be interviewed. But Steiner said the thefts have changed the way she comes and goes from her own home.

"My children are afraid for me to come home at night by myself, so they follow me home, and make sure I get in the house OK," Steiner said.

Steiner and other neighbors said Hubbard police have stepped up their presence on Westview Drive since the incidents.

Police said if someone is being carjacked, they should remain calm and give up the vehicle to avoid being attacked. Later, they can call the police to report the crime from a safe location.

And there are ways to avoid a carjacking in the first place, said police. That includes staying away from high-crime areas, being aware of the surroundings, using side and rear view mirrors and by keeping the doors locked and windows up.
