Summit County police said a Valley man is responsible for a bizarre bomb scare and police chase.

According to police reports, William Nickerson, 31, of Canfield, called Summit County 911 dispatchers early Monday to report a nuclear bomb transported from Boardman to Richfield, which is just outside of Cleveland.

Police were getting information from Nickerson as he sat outside the BCI building in Richfield when he suddenly drove away. Police chased him for 18 miles before he finally spun out and was forced to stop. Officers shattered the windows to remove him from the vehicle.

"When he spun out, he reached to the left," said Richfield police Lt. Joe Davis. "Officers were not aware if he had a weapon or not, and they don't take that kind of chance."

Officers searched but never found an explosive device.

Nickerson was charged with inducing panic, reckless operation and fleeing from police.
