The Mayor of Campbell will veto the budget passed by city council because it's not the same budget he and the finance committee had worked on.
The budget passed on its third reading during the council meeting Wednesday night, but new Mayor George Krinos said he has no choice but to veto the spending bill.
Krinos said somehow the budget council approved was changed from the budget he and members of the finance committee spent four and half hours hammering out in caucus.
"That budget does not require the laying off of a firefighter," Krinos said. "It does allow us to purchase the equipment necessary to maintain our streets, does allow us to do a multitude of things that would make our city move forward in a different direction. That budget has not been considered."
Mayor Krinos said the budget passed by council would give the city a potential surplus of $30,000, while the one he came up with would carry a $140,000 surplus.
Without a budget in place, Campbell could lose its certificate to operate as a city. Council can overturn the mayor's veto at its next regular meeting March 17.
