More than 60 cats were found inside a Warren home a few weeks ago, when court officials were called to a house on Pacific Place to serve an eviction notice.

The man who lived in the home lost his job because of a plant closing. The man and his wife started out with a few cats, but Animal Welfare League officials said the situation soon changed.

"Almost a hoarding situation. One female cat can have 24 or 25 kittens a year. With two or three females, it got out of hand quickly," said Ken Herlinger of the Animal Welfare League.

The couple living there have since moved out, and have given up ownership of the animals to the Animal Welfare League.

The shelter, along with several other agencies, are helping to house about 40 of the cats. There are 20 that remain inside the house, and they will stay there until room at the shelters becomes available.

The cats at the shelter are healthy, but do need to be spayed or neutered. Officials said it is important to make sure any strays are examined before bringing them home.

"Make sure the cat that is coming into your home is healthy. Get some flea medications from your vet and make sure it's de-wormed," said Dr. John Owen of the Howland Community Animal Hospital.

Fourteen of the cats were taken to the Animal Welfare League in Lordstown. Anyone interested in giving one of the pets a home is asked to call the shelter at 330-394-3512 or 330-394-4122.
