YSU Men Victorious in Home Opener

Youngstown -- Junior Vance Cooksey scored a season-high 18 points and freshman Eddie D'Haiti recorded his first double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as four players scored in double figures to lead the Youngstown State men's basketball team to an 81-41 win over Hiram on Sunday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins improve to 1-1 overall while the Terriers fall to 0-1.

Cooksey also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists while D'Haiti tallied six assists.

Senior DeAndre Mays and junior Vytas Sulskis each scored 10 points and senior Dallas Blocker posted a career-high 11 rebounds and scored four points.

The Terriers hung with the Penguins for the first 10 minutes trailing by just five, 20-15, with 9:36 left in the first half.

The Penguins, however, scored the next 11 points to extend their edge to 16, 31-15, with 5:53 after two free throws from Mays and outscored Hiram, 22-9, to close out the half and take a 42-24 lead into the locker room.

The Penguins pushed their lead out to 28 points, 58-30, with 12 minutes remaining and the Terriers would not get any closer.

Youngstown State hosts Kent State, Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:35 p.m. at the Beeghly Center as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.
