Event: Cancer Prevention Study
Date: 04/29/08
Details: You will have an opportunity to enroll in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study – 3 (CPS-3). Enrollment will take place at the Boardman Relay For Life from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Boardman Center Middle School’s Football Stadium, 7410 Market Street in Boardman. CPS-3 is a national study that will recruit a half million participants from all corners of the United States. Its purpose is to better understand the lifestyle, behavior, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.Those who participate will be asked to complete a short survey, sign a consent form, and provide a waist measurement and a small blood sample taken by certified phlebotomists. The total time involved will be about a half hour. There is no pre-registration required. You do not have to be a Relay participant. You just have to attend the Boardman Relay For Life on May 16th between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM to enroll in CPS-3.

Event: AFP May Program

Details: The Mahoning/Shenango Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, will host a luncheon program titled “Maximizing the Potential of the Internet to Supplement your Fundraising Efforts – and More!” on Friday, May 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Avenue in Boardman. This educational program will be presented by Gene Bonanno, President & Certified Internet Consultant and Beth Bonanno, Marketing & Communications Director, both of WSI – We Simplify the Internet. WSI will cover the following areas of interest, as they pertain to the non-profit sector: website design best practices, how to be found in the search engines, email marketing and new emerging technologies that can help increase online giving. Registration and networking begins at 11 a.m. A buffet luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. to be followed by the program at noon. The program will conclude by 1 p.m. Staff and volunteers involved in fundraising for non-profit institutions are encouraged to attend. The cost of the luncheon program is $15 for AFP Members and the $30 for non-members. Advance reservations are required and are due by Friday, May 16th. Event: Chinese Auction Benefit

Details: There will be a Chinese Auction on May 18, 2008, sponsored by the Cleveland chapter of "It's My Heart," which advocates for and support schildren born with congenital heart defects. The auction will be held Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 1-4 pm at the Sharon American Legion, 1395 E. State St., Sharon, PA. No cover charge. Food and children's games will be available for a reasonable price. There will be 80+ raffle items available, plus a 50/50. All proceeds go towards the programs that It's My Heart offers to families of childen born with a congenital heart defect in the NE Ohio area, such as surgical comfort bags, care packages, and legacy boxes

Event: Lost and Found at the Girard Public Library

Details: If you think you’ve lost something and can’t remember where, it might be at the Girard Free Library. We have things like jackets, cell phones, sunglasses, watches, electronic gadgets, caps, hats, a book bag, gloves, toys, photos, pocket bibles, glass cases, a girl’s brown purse and various other items too numerous to mention. Please stop in and check out our “Lost and Found” or call us and “describe” the item you might have lost to the best of your ability. We will gladly return it to you. If these items remained unclaimed for one month, we will give them to charity or simply recycle them. We would, however, like to return these “things” to their rightful owners.

Event: THE 25TH INTERNATIONAL AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL

Details: The Mahoning Valley observance of the event will begin with a reception at 7:30 PM in the Log Cabin across from the Courthouse Square Park in downtown Warren. At 8:30 PM the vigil commences at the gazebo in Courthouse Square Park. The theme for this year’s international event is: "Never Give-up, Never Forget." The program, therefore, will include a congregational reading, songs, poetry and a dramatic presentation with candles. Opening remarks will be made by Doug Franklin, Safety Service Director of the City of Warren. Music will be provided by area artists. The program will feature participation of area public, political and medical officials, students from KSU Trumbull Branch, partners, parents, siblings and friends of the deceased, representatives of the Trumbull County Area AIDS Task Force and clergy from Christ Episcopal Church in Warren will offer prayers and reflections. At the gazebo, names will be read of those who have died of HIV/AIDS, especially Mahoning Valley residents, who now number in excess of 255. If you wish to have a loved one’s name remembered, you may call (330) 399-AIDS or the event coordinator at (330) 307-4800. There will also be an opportunity that evening to add names. Come share with us and those around the world in this very special tribute to those who have died and this call-to-action and support of those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
